Dean:All I can think about is how much this job's cost us.
No specific spoilers, but through season 4 just to be safe.

Saving people, hunting things. The family business.

Dean missed the days where hours were spent scouring over the nation’s newspapers, searching for signs of hauntings or possessions. When all that mattered was helping the victims and ganking some supernatural sons-of-bitches. They stayed in shitty motel after shitty motel. He wasted their money on cheap food, expensive ammunition, and magic fingers. They splintered doors and shattered windows, breezing into crime scenes with their fake badges and corny accents.

They’d show up in their black car like Batman and Robin, just in time to save the day with their strange gadgets and knowledge that only lifelong hunters could have. Sometimes they saved everyone, but most of the time only a few. Life was simple. Kill monsters, dispel ghosts, and exorcize demons. Salt and Burn.

Nothing was more important than family; nothing. The choices were simple, and the mission clear. Save as many as you can, and kill as much evil as humanly possible. Never leave anyone behind.

Their identity was easily defined: they were Hunters.

But then the Angels came, and Lucifer decided to make Earth his chew toy. Things became complicated. They had to chose not between human and monster, but between one and many. Family and “The Greater Good of Humanity.” They always chose wrong. People turned from Humans who had names and faces and families to statistics – just another number. Family fell apart. Suddenly, they weren’t showing up just in time to save the town, but the monsters made their appearance after the Winchester’s blew into town. Trust was broken, relationships shattered. Lives ruined and brothers lost.

Nothing was more important than the world; nothing. The choices were impossible, and the mission muddied. The Greater Good always came first, even if that meant deals with the devil and selling your soul. Save yourself, and sometimes, you had to leave people behind. Even family. Even brothers.

Their identity was easily defined: they had become monsters.

Re: Definitions
This totally captures the turn of the mission, and is so simple and elegant. I love the notion that while hunters can remain "human" (although of course they don't always), maybe heroes need to be monsters. Totally challenges definitions and values. Love it :)
